Germany's recycled aluminum production fell to 685,000 tons in the first quarter

June 6, 2024
According to foreign media reports, the German Aluminum association (Aluminium Deutschland) warned that in the first quarter of 2024, all sub-sectors of the German aluminum industry production declined. At present, the energy cost of the German aluminum industry remains high, while imports from third countries have an impact on the domestic extrusion industry.

As a key material for decarbonization in Europe, in the first quarter of 2024, Germany's recycled aluminum production was 685,000 tons, an estimated decline of 7%.

Total aluminum semi-finished production fell 6% to just over 571,000 tons, with some semi-finished aluminum production showing double-digit declines. Rolled aluminum production fell 5% to about 448,000 tons, and extrusion production fell 13% to 124,000 tons.

In the aluminium extrusion sector, German manufacturers say that third countries, especially Turkey, are exerting competitive pressure. It is reported that Turkey has become a large source of German aluminum imports with a market share of about 10% in recent years.

Rob van Gils, president of the German Aluminium Association, said that high energy costs and the overall tight economic situation in Germany continue to hit manufacturers hard, and demand from key sectors, especially construction, remains low. At the same time, the sudden withdrawal of subsidy support from the federal government also led to weak electric vehicle registration data.
